Obama the conservative

Columnist Ruben Navarrette Jr. is the latest to argue that Barack Obama, despite the wails of conservatives who would like to wish away the economic woes they did so much to create, is governing as a centrist. Unfortunately, “centrist” in this country now means something far more conservative than it meant not many years ago, as I pointed out in a recent book.
Besides, American politicians almost always head toward the middle in an effort to appease the side that didn’t vote for them. Because of ignorance or ego, George W. Bush was the obvious exception, but most presidents try to work with members of the opposing party. Besides, as I’ve also pointed out elsewhere, Obama is at heart a conservative–as are most of the media that talk radio hosts like to complain about so much.
