Sandy, Bloomberg & Christie should help Obama win re-election

Posted by James McPherson on November 1, 2012

Barack Obama made this election a lot closer than it should have been by sleepwalking through his first debate with Mitt Romney and, in my view, by failing to run enough of an optimistic campaign that emphasized his many noteworthy accomplishments. Those include an improving economy, the expansion of gay rights, the auto bailout, increased access to medical care for young adults and people with pre-existing conditions, and improved student loan policies.

For many individuals, he has been a very good president, and who knows what might have been accomplished without the worst, craziest, and most obstructionist Congress in history, a Congress dedicated from the outset to try to make Obama fail even if it meant reversing their own positions?

Since most American voters seem to have the attention spans of gnats, flip-flopping on one’s supposed values too rarely hurts politicians–even in the case of pathological Etch a Sketch liar Mitt Romney, who has actually improved his standing with voters by avoiding answering any questions from the news (including even GOP house organ Fox News) for the past three weeks. His latest campaign strategy has included a phony “hurricane relief” rally and repeatedly lying about the auto industry–to the degree that even company executives declared that Romney (who once joked about his father closing American auto plants) is lying to scare voters. One can only wonder what highers-up in the Mormon church think about such dishonesty.

So now the election is relatively close, as predicted and desired by media folks and talking heads that I’ve previously ridiculed. Some polls have Romney leading, and some people (including Michael Graham of the Boston Herald and conservatives Michael Novak, Karl Rove, Frank Donatelli, Steven Hayward and Boris Epshteyn) predict a GOP win. Former Bill Clinton aide Dick Morris, who has managed the nearly impossible trick of looking even sleazier than Clinton and a few others (see here, here, here and here, ) have gone so far as to predict a Romney landslide.

I hate the reliance of the news media on polls over substance, so I actually appreciate the fact that this year’s polls seem to be contradictory and confusing. Still, barring some GOP to steal the election through rigged voting machines or even more voter suppression than expected, however, I have strong doubts about the chances of a Romney victory. In fact, as I’ve been doing consistently since last spring, I predict an Obama win with at least 290 electoral votes (270 are needed to win). I also expect Democrats to hold the Senate while Republicans maintain control of the House of Representatives.

The facts that Obama has been endorsed by New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, largely endorsed by GOP favorite Chris Christie, and that Hurricane Sandy has allowed Obama to look presidential while Romney avoided and then struggled with questions about whether he would fund FEMA, makes me more confident in my prediction. Based on information released today about a jump in consumer confidence and a jobs report by the ADP Research Institute, I suspect that tomorrow’s Labor Department jobs report will fail to give Romney a boost and may help the president.

Whether Obama deserves to win (or whether either either of these two guys should be elected) is another question, but most of the people who use a statistical approach expect the same electoral result. In that camp are Nate Silver (who has drawn considerable attention both positive and negative for his influence), Sam Wang’s Princeton Election Consortium, Drew Linzer’s Votomatic, polltrack.com, the New Republic‘s Nate Cohn, Andrew Tanenbaum’s electoral-vote.com, Josh Putnam’s Frontloading HQ, Thomas Holbrook’s Politics by the Numbers, Scott Elliott’s ElectionProjection.com, (Several of those I’ve mentioned previously, but some I learned about just today from Asawin Suebsaeng of Mother Jones.)

The conservative Rasmussen Reports, Real Clear Politics, the Washington Times, CNN, PBS, NPR, the Wall Street Journal, the Washington Post, the Los Angeles Times, Intrade, the Huffington Post, 270towin.com, all have Obama leading the electoral vote, though all their maps have “toss-ups” that include Ohio, Iowa, Wisconsin, Colorado, Nevada, Virginia, North Carolina, Michigan, New Hampshire, Pennsylvania and/or Florida.

Right or wrong, obviously I have plenty of company. Either way, a lot of people who make considerable money off of their predictions (I make none from mine) are going to be wrong. And those folks probably all will be back, making equally bad predictions, four years from now.

So with that in mind, I’ll go ahead and offer my first prediction for 2016: Seeing how well bizarre flip-flops worked for Romney, and trying to up his credibility with both Hispanic voters and conservative Christians in a 2016 bid for the White House, Christie will legally change his first name to “Jesus” and drop the last two letters of his last name from campaign literature distributed in solidly conservative states. And at least 23 percent of voters in Texas will fall for it.

Ahhh 2016, should I? Yes sir. Romney will be running for his second term. Obama will be back with his commba friends retired in Hawaii, Michelle will file for divorce for the second time. Debbie Wassermans Schultz will be a civilian also. Negative Nancy from Cally will have had 10 to many face lifts and retired, crazy talking to herself. Harry will have to go back to the Mormon church and ask for forgiveness for trashing one of his own. So who does that leave available on the left to run against President Romney? Bloomberg? No by the time he gets done with NYC he will be throw out. Hillary? Nope she is going to take the fall for Libya and the 4 State Department people killed because of a (Video? really). Its a long shot but my first though on this is The Governor from NY Presently if he survives Sandy, and he running mate will either a woman or the Current Governor of Massachusetts.

James; Good to see you back in usual form of identify “Liars” Mostly from just one side. Libya as I told you months ago is not going to look good on the legacy of One term President Obama. It will go down in history as the story not reported by the Left Stream media and I also predict they to will have even lower ratings than they have now in 2016. Dare I include the “Fluke” of the year, Yes in 2016 we will find out she really doesn’t need free “reproductive medical anything” she is a the L in LGBT and that is just fine with me and please let them all get married.

So staying with my same numbers for 2012. Romney 273 Obama 265 and Ohio goes to Obama by three dead peoples votes that were transfer to Ohio from Chicago right after they died.

Thanks, gentlemen. Reuel, I enjoy reading your comments even when you’re wrong. 🙂 And of course you could be right–a couple more conservative writers, Jay Cost and Dan McLaughlin, are predicting a Romney win in columns on RealClearPolitics this morning. If they and you are right, perhaps you should change your moniker to ReuelClearPolitics.

“Good to see you back in usual form of identify ‘Liars’ Mostly from just one side.”

I don’t excuse it from either side, and both are liars, but Romney seems to be hitting the untruths particularly hard the past few days. Not being in a swing state, I didn’t vote for either of them when I sent in my ballot the other day.

I’ll wait until this election is over for a bit before making serious predictions about the next one. Have a great weekend.

To be real clear. Romney would not be my first choice this year, but he won’t be my last choice either. Obama has that position. I to got a laugh out of turn coat Morris and the many others predicting a landslide for Romney. This is going to end late on the east coast and you will still get to bed on time out west. But Wednesday could bring on the lawyers as I have also predicted. I like that and may change my user name from Straw man to ReuelClearPolitics, but not until Romney prediction is in the bank.

Stay away from the North East to all reading this, it is getting ugly and they said Katrina was bad. Oh and the Obama/Christie moment was a fake by both. Christie to will be a one term and no chance at the Federal level. Well there I go again channeling Reagan with visions. Have a good weekend.

Wrong? Not until the last ballet is counted and not a lair until the statement I make is not completed.

The Links on the President’s “noteworthy accomplishments” [Paul Glastris, “Obama’s Top 50 Accomplishments”], and being a “good president” [Jonathan Chait, “The Case for Obama”] also should help Obama if people take the time to read the well reasoned articles and mine the comments [Glastris-387 and Chait-720] to the articles. FOX has a long way to go to beat them on substance.

Both writers are experienced and credentialed, and they have strong followings.

I like the frame of your article, your analysis and your amply supported conclusions.

Like yourself, I am not a paid pundit, analyst or commentator.

But, I enjoy serious political and public affairs commentaries like the ones you routinely post.

Thanks, Jm, for the kind words. And thanks, Greg, for the chuckle, which I needed tonight. I appreciated the photo of your late dog at the RNL the other day. One of the few things you and I have in common with Joe this year–my wife and I have an appointment to have our 13-year-old black lab put down first thing tomorrow morning, and I dug a hole in the garden for her grave a few days ago. It’s time to let her go, but it’s going to be a bad weekend.

Thanks, Scott. We went through it with another dog about 15 years ago, and it’s never easy. I appreciated your column. I was glad we could take Teddy to a vet, and they were great; the vet had lost her own dog just two weeks ago, so she ended up crying with us. We were with her when she died, and then I buried her–all 94 pounds of her–in the back garden.

Just watched Haley Barbour on CNN, “State of the Union,” trying a spin on the political impact of Hurricane Sandy, and suggesting that it did not help President Obama-it just deflected the focus of media coverage from the most pressing issues of jobs and the economy!

Hopefully, viewers have more intellectual discernment than a gnat!!

We can hope. I watched some cable [programming yesterday, and folks on both sides seemed to be mostly talking as if a Romney win would be a significant upset. It occurred to me that it wouldn’t be odd after the election–and after billions of dollars spent–that we could very well still have Obama in the White House, the same party breakdown in the Senate, and no meaningful difference in the House. I’m now watching Reliable Sources on CNN, where they’re pointing out that everyone except partisan Republicans and one horse racing columnist seems to be predicting an Obama win.

  17. James McPherson said

Everyone except George Will–who predicted 303 electoral votes for Romney–on “This Week” predicted an Obama win.

After listening to the conversations on a few more shows, I also get the sense that there will not be many changes following the election.

It could be the case that Michael Bloomberg and Chris Christie also got the sense that Obama probably will win, and positioned themselves accordingly in view of the impact of the hurricane in their states, and the need for federal assistance.

Should we turn out to be correct about the outcomes of Election 2012, we still could be busy during the next election cycle addressing issues such as jobs, tax reform, the Middle East crises, the fiscal cliff, the forclosure crises, the deficit, the prospects for Election 2016 and other matters.

That’s the way the country is turning and it’s not good. It’s ruining America. How do you hate a person because they believe in same-sex marriage? Personally, I don’t agree with it, but I don’t hate anyone that does. I just feel the word marriage is defined by a man and a woman. If the same sex individuals what to create a social union, give it a different name.

I was wrong about the the election. I am not wrong about Obama and he has a load of skeleton waiting for him back at the office waiting for him. He punted and the reality is about to come full circle. The victims of Sandy and the fact that most of the people that had home there did not have flood insurance is going to be his first test, Then the reality of the real unemployment numbers are going to surprisingly go up next month It looks as if we will see what is in that health care law now and it is going to surprise many non-followers of how sausage is made in Washington. Then we got the whole debt that if follows the same pattern as the last four years will be between 23 and 25 Trillion dollars and the interest alone will be about 300 billion a year oh and the long term short term trick he played to kick that can down the road a couple of years ago is waiting for him in his office. I say Congratulations to President Obama and enjoy the victory. I would add the other things such as Libya, Fast and Furious, Leak-gate but they are going to the least of his problems the next 4 years. It the debt stupid, no one here is this comment intended for.

Congratulation JM you picked it closer I Hope I am wrong and he does turn this around. But the skeletons he has stashed are going to come out someday and if he thinks what President Bush pass on to him was bad the end of 2013 could be interesting. Oh and yes I still don’t believe this was all caused by President Bush policies. At some point he owns it and the debt he will have on January 1 2013 will be 17 trillion. That is what he and no one in Washington can fix with any of the plans I have heard in the last two years of campaigning.

  33. jm said

    ‘Reuel

What specific legislation was offered by GOP Congressmen to deal with any of the issues you cite will lead to a crisis, and explain how the solutions would have been effective?

  34. Reuel said

JM The Republicans in the house passed I think 33 bills in the last two years and unlike most bills passed they usually go to the Senate and they added their stuff, then they go to committee and get hashed out. But Harry Reid put them all in the trash on purpose. Now I know many of them had spending cuts which is one good way to reduce the budget, and maybe if Harry would of let them go through the normal path a compromise would of been reached. But they weren’t even put to the floor of the Senate. Also the House passed a budget the last two years and the only thing this country has been running on for the last three years are continuing resolutions. Now I am not quite sure what legislation you pass to stop them from spending a trillion dollars more than they take in, but as I do and all households do we have and know what our budget is and Congress and the President should pass one. I can not explain all the bills they passed here, but you are welcome to go to their website and read them all. You know Obama touted his jobs on the trail for a couple of weeks, but then had to stop saying that becuase he never presented to the congress and in the the said bill it was another “Saved Jobs” bill not create new jobs in the private sector bill, which was in many of the Houses bills. See if you increase the private sector jobs then they two can contribute their fair share in income tax sales tax, revenues and all the other ways they call it to get money to the government to hand out to their friends and family.

JM; What you are not concerned about the debt at its current level or even higher as projected by the governments own agencies? I certainly am and at what point does the interest payment of said debt become the largest part of the “Continuing Resolutions” they are currently running this country on.

So I will end with a question to you. What have the Democrats in Congress offered as legislation in the past two years to reduce the debt? I can think of only one and that is to raise taxes on the top 120,000 riches people in the country that equals only .07 percent of said deficit each year and we still have trillion dollar plus deficits. Plus the real cliff moment is December 31, 2012 when all the Sequester cuts agree to by the super duper committee came up with hits the fan.

Oh I am not a Republican but have started heading to right quite swiftly since 2009. I support the one and only thing that was part of the original Tea Party in Boston in the beginning and was the intent of the current Tea Party today. Lower taxes, cut in wasteful spending. The other thing that could reduce the debt is more private sector jobs paying their fair share and the regulations in the last 3 years have gone to far. Plus the Affordable Heath Care Law is not as affordable as it was sold to us. Man I think I just cut about half the deficit right there.

News reports suggest that GOP leaders are ready to lean forward and embark upon serious bipartisan negotiations which, of cource, has been lacking.

That’s what commentators and editors are suggesting, and that’s the direction we should be pursuing.

Jm, I hope that’s the case. The lead headline in my morning paper this morning is “Obama, Boehner look to compromise.” I hope they do–and I think if Boehner used his office as he could, being tough at times while compromising at times, he could look like the kind of statesman that has been sorely lacking in Congress since the departures of folks like Dole, Kennedy, and the sane version of John McCain.

At the same time, Congress might regain some credibility, allowing the Republicans to actually gain more seats in 2014 and 2016 than they would with more obstruction and fighting over Obamacare and social values–battles which, regardless of the outcome, the GOP has already lost. And maybe then Obama and the Democrats might actually approve a budget, as well.

    Thanks to you both.

Exactly. Also, how about more republicans accepting cabinet positions, if offered, instead of refusing so that their voices are heard by the democrats on the same level. We have to stop hating each other. Christie did the right thing in being cordial and respectful during their disaster. You can disagree on policies with hating the other person, right? I mean it order to make this thing work, it’s time for the Democrats to stop gloating, the republicans to stop whining, and provide some bi-partisan solutions. If Obamacare is going to cost so much then the republicans need to be right there on the inside bringing facts to why it’s so costly instead of just saying “it doesn’t work”, “it costs too much”, “doctors are gonna quit”.

I asked my doctor about it and she said, “Quit? Then what would I do become a sushi chef?” She makes approximately $600/hr and said she’ll be fine. She doesn’t anticipate any issues that she doesn’t already go through with my insurance company. After that she told me to go and have my blood work done again because MY INSURANCE COMPANY was complaining that my triglycerides were too high and either I didn’t fast before the test or I needed to be put on medication. I can understand why you would take a break. I plan to take one myself.

When you swing back to blogging, you may want to take a stab at this observation by Hugh Hewitt:

There is no vacation in the communication battle with an incumbent president. The Congressional GOP needs to get into the public space and make their case on spending, taxes, and immigration, right now.

And that doesn’t mean op-eds in the Wall Street Journal though those are fine. It means Fox News and talk radio. Rally the base and energize its legions. Don’t leave them to gnaw on each other’s legs. Mitt Romney was beaten by Sandy and the media-government-industrial complex.

    You are welcomed!

BTW, I am fascinated how David Frum, thedailybeast.com, posted an article on November 1 explaining why he will “vote for Romney,” LINK: http://www.thedailybeast.com/articles/2012/11/01/why-i-ll-vote-for-romney.html , and then found the time a mere 6 days later to publish an ebook: “Why Romney Lost.” LINK: http://www.thedailybeast.com/davidfrum.html

Making that money by whatever means necessary I guess!
